- Blind Irishman sees with the aid of son's tooth in his eye
DUBLIN (AFP) - An Irishman blinded by an explosion two years ago has had his sight restored after doctors inserted his son's tooth in his eye, he said on Wednesday.
Bob McNichol, 57, from County Mayo in the west of the country, lost his sight in a freak accident when red-hot liquid aluminium exploded at a re-cycling business in November 2005.
[...]
After doctors in Ireland said there was nothing more they could do, McNichol heard about a miracle operation called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) being performed by Dr Christopher Liu at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton in England.
The technique, pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating a support for an artificial cornea from the patient's own tooth and the surrounding bone.
The procedure used on McNichol involved his son Robert, 23, donating a tooth, its root and part of the jaw.
McNichol's right eye socket was rebuilt, part of the tooth inserted and a lens inserted in a hole drilled in the tooth.
The first operation lasted ten hours and the second five hours.

- Researchers discover gene that blocks HIV
[Ερευνητές ανακαλύπτουν γονίδιο που μπλοκάρει τον HIV]

Stephen Barr, a molecular virologist in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, says his team has identified a gene called TRIM22 that can block HIV infection in a cell culture by preventing the assembly of the virus.
"When we put this gene in cells, it prevents the assembly of the HIV virus," said Barr, a postdoctoral fellow. "This means the virus cannot get out of the cells to infect other cells, thereby blocking the spread of the virus."
[...]
"This means that TRIM22 is an essential part of our body's ability to fight off HIV. The results are very exciting because they show that our bodies have a gene that is capable of stopping the spread of HIV."
[...]
"We are currently trying to figure out why this gene does not work in people infected with HIV and if there is a way to turn this gene on in those individuals,"
[...]
The researchers are now investigating the gene's ability to battle other viruses.

For the new treatment, the researchers used a virus related to rabies called vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Endemic to Central America, the virus causes mild, cold-like symptoms in humans and is based on single-stranded RNA instead of the doubled-up DNA.
The virus causes an active infection, rather than a harmless immune reaction as a typical vaccine would. Its infectiousness will likely limit its use as a therapy, the researchers admit.

- Scientists identify new longevity genes
Scientists at the University of Washington and other institutions have identified 25 genes regulating lifespan in two organisms separated by about 1.5 billion years in evolutionary change. At least 15 of those genes have very similar versions in humans, suggesting that scientists may be able to target those genes to help slow down the aging process and treat age-related conditions. The study will be published online by the journal Genome Research on March 13.

The next time your children get cavities, they might get tooth regeneration instead of fillings.
That's because materials scientists are beginning to find just the right solutions of chemicals to rebuild decayed teeth, rather than merely patching their holes. Prehistoric animal's genetic map could be decoded within two years

MOSCOW - Russian scientists say they have obtained the most detailed pictures so far of the insides of a prehistoric animal, with the help of a baby mammoth called Lyuba found immaculately preserved in the Russian Arctic. The mammoth is named after the wife of the hunter who found her last year. The body was shipped back to Russia in February from Japan, where it was studied using computer tomography in a process similar to one doctors use to scan patients.
[...]
Lyuba's body is stored in a purpose-built container that maintains sub-zero temperatures to prevent the pre-historic tissue from decomposing. She will soon be flown to Salekhard, capital of the Yamalo-Netnetsk region.
"She will be exhibited in Salekhard starting this summer," Tikhonov said. "A special glass-case with constant sub-zero temperatures has already been prepared for her."

- Nanofibers Heal Spinal Cords

Injected directly into the spinal cords of paralyzed mice, a new material restores use of the animals' hind legs.

An engineered material that can be injected into damaged spinal cords could help prevent scars and encourage damaged nerve fibers to grow. The liquid material, developed by Northwestern University materials science professor Samuel Stupp, contains molecules that self-assemble into nanofibers, which act as a scaffold on which nerve fibers grow.
Stupp and his colleagues described in a recent paper in the Journal of Neuroscience that treatment with the material restores function to the hind legs of paralyzed mice. Previously, researchers have restored function in the paralyzed hind legs of mice, but those experiments involved surgically implanting various types of material, while the new substance can simply be injected into the animals. The nanofibers break down into nutrients in three to eight weeks, says Stupp.

Από τον χώρο της Ιατρικής:
- Brain Scanners Can See Your Decisions Before You Make Them
You may think you decided to read this story -- but in fact, your brain made the decision long before you knew about it.
In a study published Sunday in Nature Neuroscience, researchers using brain scanners could predict people's decisions seven seconds before the test subjects were even aware of making them.
The decision studied -- whether to hit a button with one's left or right hand -- may not be representative of complicated choices that are more integrally tied to our sense of self-direction. Regardless, the findings raise profound questions about the nature of self and autonomy: How free is our will? Is conscious choice just an illusion?

"Your decisions are strongly prepared by brain activity. By the time consciousness kicks in, most of the work has already been done," said study co-author John-Dylan Haynes, a Max Planck Institute neuroscientist.
[...]
Also, the predictions were not completely accurate. Maybe free will enters at the last moment, allowing a person to override an unpalatable subconscious decision.

- Breast cancer gene fingerprint find
A genetic fingerprint that reveals the breast cancer patients who are at high risk of the deadly spread of the disease has been found, a discovery that also reveals a new target for treatments.
[...]
The short term use of this discovery will be in diagnostic tests but the team also found that the pattern is controlled by a single gene called bromodomain 4 (Brd4) and by inserting this gene they could suppress tumour growth and metastasis in studies of mice, suggesting that a drug to mimic this effect could help treat the disease.
[...]
"The results of this study and other work in our laboratory suggests that people with inherited differences in Brd4 and the proteins that it induces have a genetic predisposition for developing cancer metastasis," he adds. "A better understanding of this gene may lead to improved methods of diagnosing and treating cancer."
As for when a test could be available, he said that depended on the outcome of more research to establish how often this gene plays a central role in spreading. In the longer term, it may lead to drugs too, but he says much work has to be done to identify those with the right action: "We are currently unaware of any drugs that mimic Brd4."

Eating breakfast cereal might make
it more likely you have a boy.

The sex of new babies is influenced by the mother's diet before she conceives, a new study suggests. According to a survey of 740 British mums to be, a high-calorie diet is more likely to lead to a baby boy in nine months' time.
[...]
Intriguingly, a major difference seemed to be between women who routinely ate breakfast cereals and those who didn't, Mathews adds. Among those who ate breakfast cereals almost every day, 59% gave birth to boys. In contrast, 43% of those who claimed to eat breakfast "rarely or never" produced sons.
[...]
The results seem to fit with the biological theory that many animals, perhaps including humans, tend to produce male offspring when food and resources are in plentiful supply. This is thought to be a strategy to maximize genetic returns, as successful, healthy sons can go on to produce far more grandchildren than daughters.
[...]
Nevertheless, evidence is emerging that not only is it true that ʽyou are what you eatʼ — but also that your motherʼs or even your grandparentsʼ diet can affect your health. Previous studies of mice have shown that coat colour can be determined by a mother's diet during pregnancy, and that childrenʼs risk of diabetes can be raised by chemical changes to DNA that resulted from their grandparentsʼ poor diet when pregnant with the childrenʼs parents.
